Infiltration Case Study

There are over 9 million manholes in the US older than most of us, and about 4 million of those are in need of some serious help. Unfortunately, the manhole piece of the Collection System puzzle sometimes gets lost, goes unnoticed or is put on the "back burner", usually due to a belief that the major source of Infiltration is in the pipes and laterals. Although repairing each of those segments is certainly important, it only removes about 50 % of the Infiltration and the work is more difficult and costly to perform than manhole rehabilitation. A leak is a leak is a leak, whether it's coming from a manhole, pipe or lateral. Why not fix the easiest ones first. Accessing a manhole is easy and the actual repair of the leak is usually not rocket science. Our cementitious plug and urethane grout products are easy to use and very effective in stopping the most stubborn leaks. It's hard to believe that 10 gpm of Infiltration can add up to $9000 in treatment costs over the course of a year, if left unrepaired. It's harder to believe that it can cost as little as $100 to fix that costly leak.

The following is a case study showing the significant reduction in treatment costs when leaks in manhole are repaired.  There have been certain assumptions made in order to complete this study: (1) One manhole leaking 10 gpm. (2) Cost to treat 1000 gallons is estimated to be $2.00.

ONE MANHOLE LEAKING AT A RATE OF 10GPM
10 gpm x 60 minutes = 600 gph
6 00 gph x 24 hours = 14,400 gpd

TREATMENT COSTS
$2.00/1000 gals. x 14,400 gpd = $28.80 cost/day to treat infiltration from 10 gpm leak
$28.80/day x 365 days = $10,512.00 cost/year to treat infiltration from 10 gpm leak

SUMMARY:
Estimated cost to repair = $100.00 to $500.00
ANNUAL SAVINGS = $10,012.00 to $10,412.00
